Pilgrimages

An Introduction to Pilgrimages

A traveller passes through a place: a pilgrim allows the place to pass through them. To become a pilgrim for an hour or a day, a week or a month is to step outside the normal way of being and of experiencing the world it .To become a pilgrim is to open up a suil eile (another eye ) with which to view and see the world around us. Perhaps you might think of pilgrimage as something that old or holy people engage in; however this is not so !! Pilgrimage is an opportunity to experience yourself and the landscape that you engage with in a different way, a way that allows you a deeper experience of both yourself and the landscape. While on pilgrimage a person is encouraged to listen intensely with all their faculties. It is an opportunity to reconnect with your soul. To be fully present on pilgrimage one needs to become quiet inside ; to allow the noise that is our constant companion in daily life to reduce so that we can hear our own inner voice and hear the sounds of the world and its many wonderful inhabitants. Pilgrimage has many purposes.

To be in the present moment and to enjoy every step that you take is part of the purpose of pilgrimage. This requires of the pilgrim that they let go of all that takes them out of the present moment.

Ireland is a place where beneath its modern facade, lies a deeply rooted connection through the earth, the world of nature and its cycles with the spiritual world. Celtic and Celtomegalithic traditions and beliefs are expressed spiritually throughout the land. Hills, lakes, stone circle, dolmens, court cairns and other megalithic structures mark the Anima Loci or place of soul throughout the landscape/ country. When these sacred places, with their differing qualities, personalities and energies are acknowledged and honoured by us, they come more fully into being. Both pilgrims and the places are enhanced by this experience.

“We  had a wonderful weekend in Sligo in June.  Felt nourished and nurtured by the inspiring landscape, the ancestral energies,
the peace and quiet and time to look into my own soul. Thanks for creating this opportunity.   Blessings…
